Simplicity in Preaching by J.C. Ryle

This short pamphlet is good introduction to developing a simple, yet engaging sermon. He list five main things to take in to consideration. All of them are things you probably know, but having a reminder is a good thing at times.

The five points are:

1. You must have a clear knowledge of what you are going to preach.
2. You must use simple words.
3. You must seek to acquire a simple style of composition.
4. Aim at directness.
5. Make abundant use of illustration and anecdote.

All of these items sound easy, but they do take to practice to be done well. However, if you start with these rules you will be a long way towards writing effective sermons.

This and many other books and booklets are available free from FirstLove Publications.

New European Version

Free Copy Here

From the introduction "The New European Version isn’t a fresh translation; rather is it a remediation into modern English of the New Testament as found in the KJV and ASV. In some difficult and controversial areas, the original Greek text has been retranslated in an attempt to provide dynamic equivalence in modern English.

Overall, the New European Version seeks to provide a text which is in outline terms familiar to those who have been used to the traditional Bible versions, an  yet which is sensitive to the needs of those for whom English is a second language. Another intention of this version is to provide a modern English text which is available for use with far more liberal copyright and usage restrictions than those attached to many other modern English versions. Any wishing to reprint or quote at length from the New European Version are welcome to contact the publishers. The layout and text of the New European Version, the commentary and the reduced version of Bible Basics in the appendix are copyright Duncan Heaster."

The text is definitely closer to the ASV than the KJV. It follows the modern versions that are translated from the critical text in most cases.

Then there is the commentary. You should be aware that Mr. Heaster is a Christadelphian. As such, the notes state that Jesus is not the Son of God. And there is the belief that hell isn't a real place, just the grave.

As such, if you do request this Bible beware that there is some definite sectarian slants in the notes. I would personally recommend passing on this one unless you have the desire to study their doctrine through the notes.

The Verbose Philosopher: NKJV 1982 vs 1984/85

This is a handy guide if you have a NKJV Bible. I had known there was an update to the text, but never knew how to tell them apart. Turns out there is quite an easy way.
